A Smile of Hope
Leading Hands Organization implemented a psychosocial support and art therapy initiative that brought together 30 young women and girls from the host community, internally displaced communities, and refugee backgrounds in Tripoli. The participants were divided into two groups of 15 to ensure a safe, supportive, and interactive learning environment. The initiative began with a series of psychological support and stress relief sessions facilitated by a professional psychologist. During these sessions, participants learned practical techniques for managing stress and trauma, including deep breathing exercises, emotional regulation, and peer support strategies. The sessions also encouraged participants to share their experiences, strengthen social connections, and build resilience together. As part of the program, a dedicated workshop titled "How to Protect Myself from Violence?" raised awareness about gender-based violence, personal safety, and self-protection. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants gained knowledge on recognizing risks, building self-confidence, and accessing available support services. At the end of the sessions, each participant received a hygiene kit along with mental health tip cards designed by the psychologist to support their well-being beyond the workshops. The second phase of the initiative focused on art as a healing tool. Participants collaborated with a professional mural artist in a creative process that began with brainstorming, sketching, and discussing the mural's message. They then worked together to paint a large public mural in King Fahd Garden, in the heart of Tripoli, transforming their emotions, stories, and hopes into a vibrant work of art. The mural symbolized resilience, peace, and the strength of women in overcoming the challenges of conflict and displacement. Located in one of Tripoli's most visible public spaces, it continues to serve as a lasting reminder of hope, solidarity, and community healing while contributing to the beautification of the city. To amplify the impact of the initiative, participants also recorded short video messages explaining the meaning behind their artwork and sharing their personal reflections. These clips were compiled into a social media campaign that highlighted women's voices, promoted awareness of mental health and gender equality, and encouraged the wider community to engage with messages of resilience, inclusion, and peace. This initiative was implemented in partnership with the Mediterranean Women’s Fund and in collaboration with the Municipality of Tripoli. We extend our sincere appreciation to both partners for their valuable support and commitment, which contributed significantly to the success of this initiative. Their collaboration helped promote the role of art as a powerful tool for healing, peacebuilding, women's empowerment, and strengthening social cohesion within the community.
